Ok so in light of several circumstances I'm seriously transitioning my groceries to Organic!

It seems like food just isn't the same anymore.
In the grocery stores, the meat portions are just getting bigger and BIGGER. Is it just me or does anyone else think some of these chicken legs are starting to look like Turkey legs?

Trail is convinced that all grocery stores are pushing CLONE meat now. LOL!
How else is the meat getting bigger but the prices are the same, if not lower?
While I think the Clone Theory is a little far-fetched (though he might be on to something), I DO worry about all the steroids they are pumping into our meats and the pesticides used on our produce in these massive production line plants. Not to mention sugars, preservatives and other products used in our non-perishable groceries so they can keep them in the stores longer!

It's scary b/c we are putting this stuff INTO our bodies! And then we wonder why so many people have all these illnesses: diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure- the list goes on and on!

Now I just feel guilty when I give the kids food that I feel like has no nutritional value. I don't want to feed garbage to them their whole childhood and then they have poor health choices as an adult b/c it's what I taught them!

And we Southerner's have it the WORST with our deep fried, gravied, casseroled meals followed by sweet syrupy sugary desserts. Hell, even our DRINKS are filled with sugar! Sweet Tea=Liquid Diabetes! lol

SO health-wise- I'm SOLD on organic groceries and more conscious meal choices. The question is, can I AFFORD it?

As soon as I mentioned going organic, lots of ppl responded that it would be expensive. But there are lots of average joes living healthy lifestyles- I just need to find out their secrets....

Fortunately for me I have a Whole Foods Market AND a Trader Joes within a few miles of my job, so I can grocery shop there on my lunch hour. I'm not quite sure what my solution will be for items that must be refrigerated but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

The only way I can make this a LIFESTYLE change and not a spur of the moment fad is to take things slowly but surely.

In my research I found some really good advice on Whole Foods blog from other consumers who have been "converted" to organic food. I copied and pasted a few below for anyone else that is considering this lifestyle but doesn't know if it will fit in their budget.

MY TIPS:
-If possible, avoid purchasing organic products in large chain grocery stores. They tend to jack up the prices of these items b/c they want you to buy their brands. Instead find a Health Conscious Grocery Store (Like Whole Foods Market or Trader Joes. Organic food prices at these stores are much more reasonable.

-Whole Foods has a monthly coupon publication called The Whole Deal. The PDF can be printed from their website.

-Trader Joes does not have coupons or sale flyers b/c they already offer their items at the lowest price. The prices are comparable (if not better for some items), but they do not have a large product selection. Start your grocery shopping at Trader Joes FIRST, and then if something isn't available there, go to Whole Foods or another Organic store for the rest.

-Though I can't yet afford organic meat, I purchase my meat products from farmer markets rather than large chain grocery stores. Most farmer's markets use local businesses to supply their stock. Though it is not a perfect solution, Local Farmers are less likely as many steriods and other harmful additives used by large factories because they are not producing the same volume numbers.
If you do not have a local farmer's market, also try Asian Grocery stores (Like Super H Mart)- you can easily notice the difference in the meat portion size and the fresher taste!

-Try to plan more than one meal out of an item on your grocery list so you save money by purchasing less ingredients.

-I'm debating buying a kit to start an herb garden for fresh herbs

-I learned if you bring your own grocery bags to Whole Foods, they will take a dollar off your purchase! That's almost the average savings of a Kroger Plus card! =P

CONSUMER TIPS:
-Buy sale items and plan your meals around the items you purchase on sale.

-Stop or reduce your use of disposables – styrofoam or plastic cups, paper plates, paper napkins, sponges, etc.

-Stop buying bottled water. Use a Brita (filtered) water jug to fill reuseable (and recyclable) SIGG water bottles.

-Learn the Organic product name brands and go to their websites for coupons.

-Replace junk food with fresh fruit and veggies
The junk foods are so full of useless ingredients that you end up eating way more than you need. Weight loss at no extra charge)

-My money-saving tip is to buy only what you need for the week’s menu. I plan my menu for the week based on fresh produce available and money-saving deals at Whole Foods.

-NEVER go shopping hungry. This helps to stay within budget.

-Every time you open a new bottle of salad dressing, jar of pasta sauce, or carton of milk, write the date on the lid with a permanent marker. It will help keep track of what’s on hand and you save money and reduce waste by not having to throw out spoiled, uneaten food. It works especially well for dairy products like big tubs of yogurt and cartons of milk.

-Buy mostly ingredients. It does take a little more effort to cook from scratch, but this truly saves the most money.

-Plan your shopping trip “before” I go into the store. Leave a little money for a deal or two, but in general know what your total cost will be.

-Whole Foods offers a “Shopping On A Budget” class. You may learn quite a few money-saving tips!

-Find an item on sale and then use a coupon at the checkout which you can find in the Whole Deal coupon booklet . For instance: Lifeway Organic Kefir on sale for $3.39Add a $1.00 off coupon which only comes up to $2.39.

Birthday #1 and 2: Day at the Zoo

The first 2 birthdays of Birthday Season fell into a 2-for-1 deal.

We celebrated by taking the whole Rachal Clan to Noah's Ark- An animal shelter/zoo and Nature Preserve in our neck of the woods.

The timing could not have been better! Scenery was beautiful and the weather was perfect.

Coincedentally, Evidence (The Zebra at Noah's Ark) was ALSO celebrating his 2nd birthday- which caused for a special event at the zoo and gave me a party theme. :)

Birthday Season Opener

Yes! "Birthday Season" is upon us!

The timeframe between April and July when all five of our kids have birthdays consecutively every two weeks.

I have to admit, last year being my first year of the FULL season, I was a little intimidated.
It can be difficult enough to plan a birthday for ONE child, much less five!

Plus I have always tried to throw some original flair into the parties instead of deferring to Chucky Cheese, which can add additional stress.

I've learned that Birthday Season presents me with two major obstacles:
1. Being Creative x 5
2. Being able to afford it all

To fix obstacle #2, we made the decision not to throw big gatherings for birthdays anymore.
Even though we love sharing these moments with all our family and friends, it can put a $$ strain on both sides.

I love supporting my friends by attending their kids birthday events... But I can imagine being in their shoes getting 5 birthday party invites to the same house within eight weeks! Gas to the country alone would kill them! lol

Then from our side, it can be expensive to make sure the kids get (majority) of the gifts they want, decorations, and fun birthday activities. Plus providing food and beverages for 20 to 40 additional people five times can be tough. Then you throw in party favors for children guests, birthday cakes and the dollar signs keep adding up!

We have decided instead that we will do an activity with the kids and then have presents, cake and ice cream with the family afterwards. That way we make sure each child feels like their birthday was properly celebrated and we still have grocery money by the end of the summer! ...Just in time to buy back to school supplies =P

For obstacle #1, I've really got to get my imagination in high gear! I have a few ideas nailed down but not the details to every party like I normally would have.

Time is sneaking up on me! Seems like it was just Christmas. =/

Birthdays 1 and 2 are this weekend. Happy Birthday to Tayler (7) and Tre'stin (8)!! Can't wait to celebrate with you!!

Bathroom Inspiration

I know, I know, sounds like a weird blog title. But it’s slow at work and I’m distracted so bare with me. =)

And your bathroom, I think, is a strange place to be “inspired” by…
Nonetheless, it started two days ago.

I bought some new ceramic statues for my living room bookcase thinking I would add some color for spring and summer. Though the items looked good when I purchased them in the store, when I brought them home and put them in my bookcase, I was sadly disappointed.

I wrapped them up and brought them back to TJ Maxx on Wednesday with the SOLE attention of returning and getting my money back. But that Wednesday was an ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS day in Atlanta! I wasn’t quite ready to go back to work and decided to browse around.

Randomly my mind started whirling about all the different things we needed around the house: new silverware set, bathroom towels, wooden cutting board, heavy hangers, etc. etc.

I wondered into the bathroom section to look at towels and spotted a nickel finish towel bar. Instantly I thought of our large master bathroom, which we practically LIVE in, but haven’t touched up as much as we have the rest of the house.

We talked about adding shelves and possibly painting, but had never acted on the inspirations.
I also thought of the fact that we tend to throw towels over the glass shower door because we are missing something…. Yes! You guessed it! A TOWEL BAR! I quickly glanced at the price. With my ceramic pottery exchanges, this towel bar would cost me $4 plus tax! I snatched it up.

So yesterday, my hubby being the Home Improvement superhero that he is (wink!), had our new towel bar up in the bathroom by the time I got home from work. I couldn’t believe how such a simple, inexpensive change made such a DRASTIC improvement!
We had also just started replacing all the cabinet hardware in our house, a few knobs at a time so it wouldn’t damage our wallets. We chose nickel finish squared knobs and have already started on our kitchen cabinets. Inadvertently, the trim on the towel bar would match EXACTLY with the hardware knobs, which is also the same finish as our door knobs. It was all coming together!

Now we realized that our toilet paper holder is NOT nickel. It’s silver. … BOO.
I remembered I had seen a nickel plated toilet paper holder at TJ Maxx too, and it was some ridiculous price- $7 I think! (One below also from overstock.com)

Since our hardware game was getting on point, I started thinking of what other things we could do to spruce the room up. My goal is to create a spa inspired haven that will allow us to maximize our sunken garden tub and play up the stone tiles.
We are not planning to rush out and do all this in one day, but it’s nice to have an established goal to work towards. Plus you get to enjoy little satisfactions constantly as you watch everything piece together!

My Current Checklist:
-New coordinated towels and washcloths- All white
-Wooden shelves over sunken tub

-Bath salts and Apothecary Jars (The beauties below are from Pottery Barn)

-Spa Inspired Artwork [And Nickel Finish Picture Frames for the Wall]

Hey there Bloggettes, I'm back!!

Just a mini-post to get my feet wet again...

So I don't know if it's because I'm getting older or if my sense of style is simply inspired, but I'm in LOVE with super feminine clothing and accessories right now!

Digging through my closet the other night I discovered a pale pink/almost beige satin trench coat I had purchased a year ago and never put into use! Now I'm hoping to build on that piece and have fun with this new look!

A couple of people have asked me how I "do it"...
And no, get your mind out of the gutter!! lol-
The discussion was about how to get what you want without sacrificing what you need.

I was a single mother of two, and now part of a blended family of 7 (5 kids & 2 Adults) with a mid-range salary, so needless to say I've had to find 20 different ways to stretch a dollar!!

I'm a brand name shopper who believes in Quality over Quantity, but I don't shop without a good deal (or sacrifice- depending on the purchase! lol)

Just thought I would share some of my tips & tricks, it's not 100% foolproof but maybe you will pick up an idea to expand your budget, or maybe you have some awesome tips and would like to share with me as well!! =)

Today's topic is groceries. Here goes...

Groceries:
I can never keep track of coupons (for food) if that's where you thought I was going. LOL
I actually have a more complex approach for groceries.

Keep in mind, I'm a "GRITS" (girl raised in the south) so this is based off of American/Southern food basics. It would be easy to make a similar list based off your own most frequently used items.

1. Keep staples in your house at all times-
I PROMISE you will use at least ONE of these a day. Even if you don't have any other groceries, you can make a meal out of these alone!!
This list totals to around $25

-bread [$1.50]
-butter [$2]
-sugar [$1.50]
-all purpose flour [$1.50-$2]
-milk [$2-$4]
-eggs [$1-$2]
-potatoes [$2-$4]
-onion [$2-$3]
-ketchup/tomato sauce [$1.50]
-mayo [$1.50]
-cream of chicken soup [$1]
-cream of mushroom soup [$1]
-crackers (saltine or ritz) [$2-$3]
-for my southerners - Lipton Tea Bags for brewing Ice Tea [$2]

2. Try to plan your week's menu around the same key ingredients so you don't have to buy a whole bunch of different things.
Example: canned tomatoes can be used in spaghetti, enchiladas, beef/vegetable soup and gumbo (among other things). One large family can is $1.80, which can suffice for two meals.

3. Cook enough to have leftovers to take to work the next day.
Eating out at work is the NUMBER ONE "wallet-killer"!!
The money you would spend on ONE meal eating out is the equivalent of two packs of dinner meat (or a romantic steak for 2 dinner at home!)

Also make sure you are making meals that carry well to work. Save items that don't "rollover" for Friday nights.
Example: Tacos/Nachos, Fish & soups aren't easy to take as leftovers. Save these types of meals for Friday nights and weekends.

4. Gadgets make life easy!!
You may be thinking, how will I ever find time to cook dinner when I get off of work?! Sorry, you get NO sympathy from me! I work 8-5pm, have a 2hr commute, children with bathtimes & homework, and my own shows I like to watch too. If I can make dinner every night, so can you!
These are kitchen gadgets that I would NOT be able to do it without though!!
Any time I give a housewarming gift, I pick one of these items b/c I know how nifty they can be!

Griddle- I make ALL breakfasts with this gadget, I also use it to sear meat before cooking in the oven so it doesn't dry out, and it's great for sauteed veggies as well. You can get the basic size from Walmart or any other all purpose store for about $29. Larger sizes are $40-50, which is what I need to upgrade to considering the number of ppl I'm usually cooking for!

Slowcooker/Crockpot- My mom gave me one when I turned 18 and moved out. I have always had one since! The one I have now only has 3 legs (LOL), so it's time for an upgrade on this too- but it just proves how useful it is.
The great thing about this is, you never actually have to COOK anything. Just throw all the ingredients in and it cooks all day on a low heat setting (which is impossible to burn!)
You can use it to make a main course, appetizer, or one pot meal.
Great for any type of meat (will have meat so tender it falls off the bone!), Spaghetti/Chili are delicious when slow cooked.
You can get a million different meal ideas at www.slowandsimple.com.
Crockpots can also be found at places like Walmart, ranges from $25 to $50 depending on the settings. 5 to 6 quart is the size you would need for a complete meal. You can get the basic with three heat settings (keep warm, low & high), or you can also get more high tech digital slowcookers that allow you to set a timer. If you have a long commute like me, the extra $$ for the digital slowcooker is worth the investment b/c most of your meals will be overcooked by the time you get home.

Rice Cooker
My Asian Friends, I KNOW you have this item ON LOCK (LOL!!), so you can skip over this one! My American Friends, get a rice cooker! I know most American meals don't call for rice (unless you are making cajun or low country), but rice is a great side filler for meals or soups, it's inexpensive and it feeds many!!
This rice cooker is $24.88 at Walmart, but you can get larger sizes and more features with more expensive versions.

5. Where to shop for what
Some places have great prices for meats, but screw you on other items. Because of my commute, I pass almost every store on the way home, and some items I purchase on my lunch hour (depending on whether it needs to be refridgerated)
I also designate days to purchase different items if I can't get it done on the weekend. For example, Tuesdays I go to the asian market for fresh meat and veggies, Wednesday I go to Kroger for their 10 for $10 deals, Thursday I stop at Sam's Club for bulk TP, Paper Towels & laundry detergent.
Here's what I've found to be the best shopping combinations:

Asian/Farmer's Markets: have the best deals on meats and fresh vegetables. There are a ton of local farmer's markets in every major city so this isn't an unattainable place for most ppl. You DO get price-robbed for toiletries and staples at these places though (so pick up windex and ketchup somewhere else!)

KROGER: Occasionally they will have a meat special, but most of the time I only go to Kroger for their $10 for $10 deals. This special has certain items for $1 each! Example: canned veggies, flour, sugar, liquid hand soap and other basics. Also the more points you build on your Kroger plus card, you can save $0.10 a gallon on gas if you use Kroger gas stations.

PUBLIX Rarely ever have good prices on meat OR veggies, but they have a lot of buy one get one free sales on other items. Example: cereal, bread, pasta sauce, salad dressing, etc. This is also the best place for Kids Lunch items!!
Today I bought Ritz Cheese Sandwiches and Teddy Grahams for Sarina's lunch- buy one get one free!!

WALMART I know there is a lot of hype around their groceries being cheap, but don't be fooled! You will get better deals on meat and veggies at the farmer's market. Walmart IS great for non-perishables and toiletries.
Use this place for non/p items like Mac & Cheese packs, dry beans, pasta, cereal and also toiletries- mouthwash, toothpaste, deodorant, household cleaners, etc.

Warehouse Membership Shopping: Costco, BJs, Sam's Club, etc.
YES, you can AlWAYS get great deals on places like these, but do you really need everything in bulk?
Normally when I go to Sam's or Costco, I'm only buying a couple of items.
These are my favorites for Warehouse Shopping:
Bottled water, toilet paper, laundry detergent, and CLOROX Bleach for Trail's obession for cleaning countertops 5 times a day! (haha)

Work Wardrobe Essentials- Style Combos

YAY!! WE GOT A NEW DRESS CODE POLICY AT WORK!!

Puhahahaha, I know my thought process is difficult to understand (except by Lyn)-
But I HEART structure!! LOL
Organized lists, detailed to-do projects, powerpoint presentations & illustrated reports ROCK!
I am a CAPRICORN in the truest sense!

And NOW we get more strict on our Business Casual policy. =)

No, we aren’t strictly Business Attire YET, and though I love that idea I couldn’t afford a closet full of suits right now.
But since our dress code policy had never previously been established (small company), many employees (I’m guilty too!) began to take advantage and dress more comfortable than norm for an office. We interact with clients over the phone, so it was more lenient.
Now we are expanding from a smaller company, to a more formal business environment, with potential and perpetual clients in and out on a daily.

This gives me the opportunity to clean house if you will, and of course… GO SHOPPING!! =)

It reminded me that long ago I created a “work wardrobe essentials” list for myself & girlfriends. I searched my old emails and found it!!
Haha, kinda funny that even 3-4 years later- all of these items are still wearable.

Anyways, I did one of my CRAZY lists last night after a convo with Lyn and this list actually doesn't seem that crazy!
Thought I would share…

The conversation was about how working in the office world you have to look professional and exude a certain polished air to gain the respect you deserve (especially YOUNG FEMALE MINORITIES who are attractive).

But often times your budget- when allotting for rent [now- mortgage!], a car note, credit cards, KIDS (God bless you)- isn't very compatible with the look you need to put together.

So I took 15 basic work wardrobe essentials and switched around combinations to make an ENTIRE MONTH'S work wardrobe NEVER wearing the exact same thing!

The items that don't have a color listed can be adjusted to your style, and this would work with whatever budget.
YOU determine whether your white shirt is from Target or Nanette Lepore, but either way you'll be totally outfitted for your CAREER!! =)

Cocktail Mix for Wedding Favors- Yay or Nay?

Okay, getting to the point where I need to have a set budget and an idea of what I want our wedding to be like.

Came across these wedding reception favors.
Cocktail Infusions= HOW CUTE?!!!!
They are little mix drink satchels that you put into your cup and then add alcohol of your choice for a custom mix drink!! Like a Bartender in a box! haha

This is an original USEFUL gift idea. Much more creative than a candle or mini box of mints...
But is it cliche to assume that EVERYONE attending the wedding drinks alcohol? lol

Not a baby anymore...

Huyyy, ok so I spoke briefly about this last night on F/BK, but today it's sinking in more.

My Sarina is growing up.
A couple of her back to school looks she put together)

You know how they say that moms will cry when their little one starts Kindergarten or gets on the schoolbus for the first time? Well, actually did OK with that.

So why NOW, when Sarina is beginning THIRD grade, do I all of a sudden feel like boo-hooing into a tissue?

I'm not quite sure what bothered me most...

Was it her demeanor at the Elementary School for her Open House?
She held my hand through the parking lot, but once we got inside the school, she let go and took the lead.
Teachers and other students were stopping her in the hallway, carrying conversations with her while Mimi and I stood in the background like a celebrity's no-name boyfriend. (LOL- Think Forgetting Sarah Marshall)

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't bothered by it. I was IMPRESSED.
For the first time, Sarina was introducing ME to people instead of the opposite. She just looked so confident, so self assured, and spoke so intelligently...

Or was it when we went school shopping?
After the open house, we stopped by the outlet on the way home to get her some school clothes so we wouldn't have to fight the crowds this weekend.
There were some young girls we had JUST seen at her school go into a store that was suited more for High School girls than 3rd grade.
Sarina asked if we were going in that particular store like her friends.
...And that's when I realized I need to start having "talks" with her.
Girl Talks- like clothes, makeup, peer pressure, smoking, etc.

I told her,"Sarina, something VERY important for you to understand as a young girl (and when you grow up as well) is that however you dress is how people will treat you. Your appearance is the first thing people will see before you even open your mouth, and whatever you say AFTER that won't matter because they already have pre-judged you. So I'll let YOU decide, how do you want others to perceive you?"

And then I let her pick out her own school clothes. No supervision, no direction.
Once she was done, there was NOTHING I had to tell her to put back. She even put together some looks that even I wouldn't have thought of.
She came out of the dressing room and said, "Mom, do you think THIS is appropriate for a young lady?"
Young Lady... OMG, yes- she certainly was that. I just nodded my head, gave a thumbs up and had to turn away b/c my eyes starting watering!!

...It seems like just yesterday when she loved Carebears and Cinderella. Now she wants an IPOD, a bedroom that doesn't look like a baby, and shoes with a heel on them?

Where did the time go??
This is not a sad thing. I'm glad to say that she is molding into a young lady that I am very proud of. It's just tough to see your babies changing.

...I hope my little Mimi will STAY little for me a while longer!!

I should have KNOWN b/c the sales lady was sweatin' the vest when she saw me come out of the fitting room to look at it in the long mirror. She probably bought it RIGHT when I left for like half the price I would have paid for it. *SIGH*

Ok, so as much as I want to say I'm NOT going to watch this season of Real Housewives in Atlanta... I'm probably going to watch this season, faithfully. lol
Especially since I learned they have a new addition to the cast, Kandi from Xscape.

For those who didn't catch last season and are thinking of watching, I found this recap on Popwatch.com to bring you up to speed....

After the jump, a quick update on what's going on with the Atlanta ladies, according to Bravo.

Kim: When we meet back up with the ladies, Kim will have broken up with the mysterious "Big Poppa," yet she'll still be reeling from it all. (Translation: It ain't over!) Kandi: A friend of Lisa, the newbie jumps right into the nest of ladies. The recently engaged Kandi, who is a former member of the '90s R&B girl group Xscape, sets her sights on launching her solo career with a new album and by helping Kim.

Lisa: She's still doing real estate, but with that slowing because of the economy, Lisa decides to launch a clothing line called Closet Freak. Mmhmm. Lisa also contemplates having another baby -- but her husband's NFL career might deter things.

NeNe: The fan-favorite is still busy doing the charity thing while also looking for her biological father. Looks like her sassy mouth is going to get her into more trouble, too! (Translation: Hell yeah!) Oh yah, and the fan favorite's fan-favorite friend Dwight Eubanks will be back.

Sheree: In the best move ever, Sheree throws a divorce party to celebrate the end of her nuptials. To keep the celebration going, she throws herself into her clothing line, She by Sheree, and its runway debut.

And, of course, the release doesn't detail who's fighting with who this season, but we can generally assume that everyone will be fighting with everyone. Or at least hope for that. The release says funny things like that NeNe will "explore her ever-evolving friendships with the other housewives, with some dramatic results," and that with Lisa "old rumors resurface." Translations: catfights. Lots of them! Hallelujah!

K. So in other news, my mission for a new look is full swing ahead!
A cool thing about working my weekend retail gig is seeing the clothes people wear. Some walk in kind of outrageous (i.e. Michael Jackson Memorial T-Shirt as a dress with a large gold belt! WHAT?!!) But more often, style mavens arrive in supercute ensembles!!

One of the best looks I've seen so far was a lady in a deep blue/indigo wrap dress with bright scarf as a headband and silver gladiator sandals. It was simple, but tasteful. The bright colors in the scarf really played off of the dark blue of the dress. And you can never go wrong with a cotton wrap dress, it fits perfectly and is comfortable.

This gave me some inspiration for my "re-invent" project this fall. I really want to play up on accessories, which I don't always do, but they REALLY DO make your outfit. Right now I'm going to stock up on accessories- scarves, shoes & jewelry, then figure out where to go from there.

I printed out Sarina's school supply list and it's ridiculous how fast it adds up! I've totaled about $70 worth of stuff?!

1. AMAZON KINDLE!!

Those of you who know me well, know that I am a BOOK LOVER. I have dreamed since I was a little girl of having a library in my home... Now this may actually attainable with this super slim, magazine size electronic book!!

Depending on the size, it can hold between 1500 and 3500 books, which are downloaded directly to the kindle in a manner of seconds after purchasing!!

Of course, it's not the library I was picturing as a youth, but if you think about how much more diverse your music collection is with an IPOD instead of stacks of CDs- I can only IMAGINE what my book collection would become!! =D

And now I won't have to worry about taking up counterspace in my kitchen for cumbersome cookbooks!!

This item is priced around the same as the IPOD touch, but for someone who reads as much as me- definitely worth the money!!!

2. Keurig B60 Special Edition Gourmet Single-Cup Home-Brewing System

Okay, so don't get me wrong. I LOVE my Gevalia coffee maker!
But I'm also a big fan of other warm drinks like tea and cappucino. The Keurig Home Brewer makes a single cup of whatever warm drink you fancy, and come with an adorable carousel of different flavors to choose from.

Plus can you IMAGINE how HORD this would look in my kitchen?!!

Talk about Modern Accessories!! lol
Also I'm an every day coffee drinker, while Latrail is more fairweather. It seems like I waste a lot of coffee making a pot in the morning when he doesn't always drink his share.... aaand I can think of about 101 OTHER useless reasons to justify this purchase!! hahaha

Kiddie Decor

The only rooms in the house I have not done any decorating in are the MAN CAVE (a.k.a. Boom Boom Room- lol) and the kid's rooms.

The Man Cave I have not touched for OBVIOUS reasons... I am NOT ALLOWED TO. =P

The girls rooms are a different story! I want to decorate them so bad!!
We just have so much going on with birthdays and family roadtrips, I don't have the money to do what I want yet.

I'm hoping by the time the warm weather is gone, when we get back into hibernation mode, that we can do some more projects around the house. The kid's rooms are one of my priorities.

Decorating for kids can be tricky.

You work all hard to make things look nice, but the bottom line is that kids mess things up. LOL
They write on furniture. They get fingerprints on the wall. They NEVER keep collections arranged attractively (think bookshelves and stuffed animals).

I want their rooms to look as nice as the rest of the house is progressing to look, but I don't want to spend a lot of money and then be angry when they don't take good care of it.

I've been looking an inexpensive kiddie decor ideas to satisfy my two concerns: Affordable & Durable Style.

Here are a few ideas I'm toying with...

1. A Fresh coat of paint!
The walls of our house came in flat paint, which sucks when you have children. I need to put a nice semi-gloss on the kid's walls so the fingerprints can wipe of with a washcloth like they were never there.
The girls have already selected their bedroom colors: Sarina wants green and Mimi wants purple. Now I just need to get busy finding ATTRACTIVE tones of those colors that go well with the warm muted sand of our trim and floorboards.
Paint is an affordable quick fix to change the look of a room. This would also be a good starting place as the color of the room can help me visualize the accessories to add.

2. Wall Decals
I want to go for a more modern style in the kids rooms, so I've been checking out websites that have elcletic removable art (b/c I like to redecorate often. =])

Tai's Birthday Ideas

Okay so birthday 4 out of 5 for our kids is upon us, and this may be my biggest challenge yet!

I'm really not sure where to begin because:

1. Tai is a boy.
I'm great with little girl theme's because I only had girls before. Things that boys are into are not really my forte...

2. Tai is a PRETEEN boy.
Which makes it even more difficult! He is well beyond Cowboys & Indians, Cops & Robbers, Tonka Trucks & Dirt!
I want him to enjoy his birthday as much as the girls have, but I want to make sure I'm not picking a theme that's too "baby" or "lame". LOL

One good thing I have to work off of is that Tai definitely has a passion for gaming.
I think my safest bet would be to plan something Gamer Related for him.
Now the important thing is picking a game he thinks is "cool"...
Is Sonic the Hedgehog still what's hip? LOL- Ok, just kidding!

I think it's safe to say that with gamers, HALO 3 is universal.

But now that I've started to look for party stuff- man, it's really hard to find party favors for ANYTHING beyond Mario! What is the DEAL with that?

Looks like I'm going to have to get creative on this one...
And the best place to start is with a cake!!

I found this really cool one online and I think it will be my inspiration...

As a gift I think we are getting him his own gamer tag on XBOX live- Apparently it's not "cool" to share a screen name with your dad!
(Even if your dad is TRE! lol)
I want to get him a couple of other things too but not sure what yet. Like I said, this is tough for me. I don't want to screw things up!!

Wedding Inspiration...

So we just got back from my cousin's wedding in Ohio, and I'm so proud of my little girls- Their wedding party skills are impeccable! =)

Sarina gave out programs and wedding favors to guests as they entered and exited the church, while Madison did her part as a flower girl.

My mom kept encouraging me to "take notes" since Latrail and I are planning a wedding next fall. Unfortunately the only thing we have really decided on thus far is an ANTICIPATED date. I still have no clue what I want my wedding to be like.

There are a few ideas floating around in my head, but nothing concrete yet.
Carrie's wedding was a large, beautiful formal affair with a Black/White/Red theme.
The color theme was sophiscated, her gown stunning, but for my own wedding I'm thinking something on a much smaller scale...

...And now that I'm actually thinking about it- A year is really not a lot of time to organize a wedding!! I need to get moving on some ideas!!

Mimi's Princess Party Recap

Ok, so the cake did not totally come out as planned (and I beat myself up over it all night!) Several factors came into play- I didn't have the right size dimensions for my cake pans, and the heat made one of my cakes fall (and my sugar cones begin to unravel!!).

Oh well, certainly not professional level, but here goes.

A Royal Birthday Affair

So my baby Madison's 3rd birthday party is tomorrow and this is the cake I am making for her tonight...

I decided to go with a castle theme for her cake since we are having her birthday party at the Georgia Renaissance Festival. I found this adorable and easy cake from one of my FAV blogs- Hostess with Mostess!

Now I have to scramble to my local SuperTarget at lunch with my shopping list so everything can be prepared tonight.

I must say though, this is the funnest shopping list I have EVER had!

After our day at the Renaissance Festival I get to WOW her with her present, which I'm sure she is totally unexpecting...
Being the Dora fanatic that she is, and seeing the sheer delight she has playing at centers in daycare, I decided to combine the two for her gift!

I can't wait to see her face when she opens the box, which also happens to be bigger than her!!

How Sweet It Is! (Cake Success)

Okay, so birthday party part 1 is finally behind us, and the kids had an awesome time!

Sarina and Mimi were with Nana, so the night before the party the birthday girls helped me fill the eggs for the Easter Egg Hunt and bake the dark chocolate cake.

And put up decorations

They also helped lick the cake bowl clean. lol

We made "grass" with a concoction of shredded coconut and green food coloring.

The biggest pain was getting the icing on!!

Not bad for a first try huh?

Make my CAKE and eat it TOO

I’m SO Super excited I can hardly contain myself!! =)

Been keeping busy lately getting ready for the storm of birthday parties that is coming to our house. 4 out of 5 of our children have birthdays within an 8 week time frame, and I’ve been swarming around busy as a bee getting everything together!!

The first birthday party is this weekend for Tre’stin and Tayler, who both have April birthdays. And then smack dab in the middle of their birthdays is Easter Weekend! So I thought what better way to celebrate their birthdays than with an Easter Bunny themed party and Egg Hunt!

It’s been fun finding Bunny Decorations and neat candies to fill their basket with, but when it came to finding the right cake I wasn’t satisfied.

I went to the usual spots- Publix, Kroger, Sam’s Club, etc. trying to find the perfect cake to fit their party.

It hits me- the mainstream cake business is a REAL rip-off!!

They charge $35 for a sheet cake made with $5 of cake mix, covered with $5 of white icing, and then I presume a $25 “labor” charge for someone to write happy birthday in icing on top?? The real annoyance comes when the person who writes on the cake has horrible penmanship or can’t SPELL! I’m thinking that’s about $100 worth of cake I’m buying in the next few weeks and I don’t see the value in it.

I DO understand the value of a specialty cake from an actual bakery because the level of craftsmanship is well beyond what the average person can do. At the same time, you are also spending a lot more money (because you get what you pay for), but I wonder if the novelty of the expensive specialty cake is lost on young children who will spend about two seconds admiring it before it gets devoured with a spoon and a side of ice cream.

WHERE IS THE HAPPY MEDIUM?

That’s when I came up with my brilliant idea! (Heaven help us)

I will make the birthday cakes MYSELF! Haha

But let me clarify… I don’t just intend on making a plain cake covered with icing and a numbered candle stuck on top. I will attempt to make a bakery cake creation that is able to compete (and perhaps win) against a Publix cake!

So Latrail thinks I’m putting way too much pressure on myself to bring this together, but I don’t see it that way.

Children are only young for so long. They grow up and get over a lot of the simple things they enjoy as children. While they still have that amazement and wonder in their eye, why not cherish it? Why not do the best you can do? At least the memories will stick with them even when they become desensitized adults.

I also look at it as an investment to acquire such a skill. With five kids, can you imagine how many birthday cakes we will have to buy in a lifetime? LOL. I’m saving us like a MILLION dollars!

Could it be that baking has become hip and no one told me?

In my research I learned that there is a “silent war” going on between cakes and cupcakes. Apparently cake decorating is a hobby for mostly old school June Cleaver moms. Young hip moms are making cupcakes instead. It’s crazy, like pirates vs. Ninjas, but I LIKE IT!

There’s like this secret club of young cool mothers who bake as a hobby- but come up with these crafty designs and have modern printed flour aprons! Where can I sign up for membership!!?? LOL

Okay, so YES I had to invest in a base supply first to get this idea off the ground running!

OMG did I really spend $50 on cake supplies last night? I purchased my 3 round cake pans so I can make a 3 tier cake, then I got a giant tub of professional decorator cake icing (b/c it only came in wholesale size), not to mention other accessories such as the icing spatulas, decorative candies, food coloring, and a cake stand.

I expected Trail to snap on me when I came home with all of this, instead he just kind of shook his head then kissed me on the forehead. I’m starting to realize he understands me much better than I give him credit for. ;-)

So tonight is the big night! I don’t want to pressure myself Saturday morning into having to create a 3 layer cake right before the party. I have all my supplies laid out and ready to go when I get home.

The cake theme is going to be Marshmellow Peeps, though I plan on freestyling the design once the cakes are made. I’m not expecting my FIRST cake to be some culinary masterpiece, but hell- I KNOW I can top the old lady in the Ingles Bakery! LOL

I will take pictures and share with you guys.

If everything goes as planned, I feel a new weekend hobby coming on!! I want to experiment with cupcakes and these cool "cake pop" things I keep reading about too!!

Michelle O. = The next Jackie O.?

Has anyone else been keeping up with Michelle Obama’s fashion?

Not to make light of the political tasks that she and the president are undertaking, but I think her appearance is of extremely significant to our nation.

When was the last time you remember a first lady being watched and mimicked this closely for her fashion?
The outfits Michelle and her daughters wore on Inauguration Day sold out online within a matter of minutes!

I NEVER heard a news segment about what Barbara Bush or Hillary Clinton was going to wear next! (Because we already knew: a frumpy 2 piece suit, Helmet Hairspray Hair and some granny shoes. =P)

I can’t think of a fashion forward First Lady in my lifetime, but my mother has often spoken fondly of seeing Jackie Kennedy in the White House when she was a young girl. Even though her role as first lady had it's own importance to the nation, Jackie Kennedy began a fashion revolution of the American public. She was not only young and attractive, but intelligent and cultivated, and possessed an innate sense of style and elegance.

Our country quickly made her an icon. She did not mimic the older, conservative styles of the previous first ladies, but remained very fashion forward in modern, yet sophisticated clothing: wide leg pants, clean suits, a-line dresses, pearl jewelry and those large round black sunglasses that became infamous and are still worn today.

The profound positive effect this had was that the nation’s young girls had a fashionable role model to look up to. The First Ladies before Jackie were older and more difficult for the younger generation to identify with. Once Jackie was in the White House, there were millions of women and girls alike imitating her style. She inspired books, movies, plays, songs, and even had a Barbie Doll in her likeness.

FAST FORWARD TO CURRENT DAY-

In the midst of music video ho*s, celebrities such as Britney Spears & Paris Hilton, and reality show queens like New York and Tila Tequila- Can you think of time we needed role models like Michelle Obama MORE? I become sick when I think of the images of women that my young girls are fed each day.

Whether we realize it or not, our daughters are soaking up these celebrity images, and the images that we ourselves as mothers put out to them with our own wardrobes, and they retain that for future reference. Our sons are watching too, and learning what they should look for in a woman and also how they should treat them when they become men. We don’t realize the profound impact we can have on our children and their future ideals simply by the appearance of our clothing.

But when I see snapshots of our first lady, I can’t help but to be inspired. Not only is President Obama giving our nation a message of hope, his wife is giving the same message to our young ladies and grown women alike.

How can you watch the first lady and NOT want to be just a little more refined, a little more sophisticated, a little more lady like?

There is also the idea planted that Michelle Obama has created this look herself, she is not some conjured depiction of what everyone else wants her to be. And she is a fashion leader naturally, not because she is vying for the throne.

Another positive note is that Mrs. Obama wears fashion that is real and attainable to the everyday budget. Most people brag about designers they can hardly afford or pronounce. I love that Michelle’s main wardrobe staple is J.Crew- simple, elegant, realistic. She is letting the style of the clothing replace the importance of the brand, a lesson we could all learn in today’s label obsessed culture.

And then what about the effect that the clothing has on confidence? It is hard not to notice her proud, regal bearing and the confidence of her step.
It’s not a strut, not a slink, not an awkward gait- just a simple, graceful stride that is boosted by an elegant outer image.

Isn’t that how I want my daughters to appear when they grow up?
Don't I want them to respect themselves enough not to feel the need to expose their bodies for attention, but to allow them to be noticed for more admirable traits- such as their mind or heart?

Isn’t that the image I want to project for myself as a mother and a corporate professional?

Ok guys so I FINALLY did it! I finally made another weekly splurge purchase at Sephora!!WHOO HOOO!!

I know, I know- THANK YOU! Please hold your applause for the END of the show!! LOL

In previous blogs I mentioned that I stopped doing my splurge buys at Sephora just $40 short of attaining my 500 point prize. My mind has been wandering to other purchases and my makeup collection is complete for now, so it has been difficult to return to Sephora. I would like to begin working on other projects, but I realize I must finish what I’ve started and get my prize!!

Sephora DID make it easy on me to make this purchase though. Spring is in the air and Summer is close behind. What better way to ring in the new seasons than with a new eyeshadow palette?

But not just ANY palette! One full of bright spring shadows, glimmering bronzer, pale pink blush and an assortment of creamy lip balm colors for only $20?!! Are you SERIOUS?!!

When I saw this online I fell in love!

I like purchasing seasonal makeup palettes b/c it feels like I have the “best of the best” for that season, and I don’t have to spend a lot of money to buy the full sizes. By the end of the season I’m usually over the colors anyways, so it works out well. But usually in a seasonal palette there are some colors you love and some you never touch. The thing I LOVE about THIS palette is that EVERY color is gorgeous and wearable! Also every review I read on this palette gave it FIVE STARS so I was really eager to get my grubby splurging little hands on it! lol

So for 3 days straight I stalked Sephora at Perimeter to get this palette, and each time I got there (at 11:30am in the morning, mind you) they had JUST sold out!!
Are you kidding? The mall JUST opened an hour ago and you are SOLD OUT?!

I started getting antsy about whether or not I would even be able to get the palette, so I just bit the bullet yesterday and purchased online. I have to pay $5 shipping but I figure it evens out in the gas I spent checking in at the mall. But this gives me 22 more points towards my grand prize... $18 more bucks shouldn't be TOO hard to spend!! =)

Soap Opera Drama

I got an email today from New York & Co. ( my career wear store) that all this month on All My Children, all of the actresses will be wearing clothes from NY&Co.’s new spring collection.

I haven’t watched soap operas in AGES, but I’m thinking about checking it out after work on Soap Network to see how they put the clothes together.

NY&Co. is a great store for work clothes b/c they have lots of button downs, pencil skirts and career pants at WAYYY affordable prices. I haven’t shopped there for anything BUT work clothes b/c some of their clothing is a little “mature” for me. It will be interesting to see how some Hollywood Soap Stars can jazz it up for afternoon primetime!

Reading this email made me realize how long it’s been since I watched the soaps.

My mom has been a faithful fan of Young & the Restless and Bold & the Beautiful since before I was a baby. I remember when I would get off the school bus in elementary school I couldn’t talk to her for like the first 15 minutes I was home b/c General Hospital wasn’t over yet. LOL

After high school I went to college early in the morning, but worked second shift so I was usually home around lunch time. I think that was when I first started watching them faithfully and really got into the story lines.

But once I got my first 8 to 5 job, that kinda ended. We used to have a TV in the breakroom of my old job, but some channel hog was always watching news by the time I got to lunch. I didn’t want to seem trivial and ask someone to turn off CNN b/c “my stories” were on!!

I never got into the "Passions" craze that everyone seemed to be on a few years ago. (REMEMBER THAT?!!! HAHA)

I couldn't watch a soap opera that had a witch AND a midget!
That is just TOO MUCH going on!!
And I had to draw the LINE on that one when some GROWN ASS MEN asked me if I had seen the latest "Passions" episode. ( YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!! puhahah)

I wonder if any of the characters I even remember are still on the soaps?

On Y&R- Is Victor still running the show? Did him and Nikki ever get back together? What about my favorite couple Cricket and Danny? Is Mrs. Chancellor still ALIVE?

On B&B- Is Brooke still trying to lockdown Ridge? Is his mom Stephanie still interfering in their relationship? Did Dr. Taylor come back from death to reunite with Ridge? Hahahahahaha

I’ve never watched All My Children, but I’ll check it out and see what it’s about.

This is day two of Sarina having her own alarm clock and it’s working well so far.
Now she gets up at 6am on her own, turns on cartoons, wakes up Mimi and makes toothbrushes for both of them. It’s a HUGE help to me and her dad in the mornings!

Our previous routine has been a little INSANE. Trying to rush into the shower to get first dibs on hot water, spending 15 mins trying to get the kids to get out of bed, starting coffee, turning on cartoons & other random tasks. I’m normally so rushed I have to put my makeup on while sitting in bumper to bumper traffic on 285. (I know what you’re thinking!! It’s a BAD habit I’m trying to break!!)

I have about an hour and fifteen minute ride to work on a GOOD DAY, so it’s been kinda hectic trying to get the kids ready and get out the door on time. It’s bad enough that I leave at the crack of dawn and it’s still dark when I get on the highway- the last thing I need to do is RUSH.

So we’ve been working on more efficient ways to get out of the house on weekday mornings.

Another bonus- My Gevalia Coffee Maker arrived!!!
Don’t know if you guys have heard of Gevalia, but if you are a coffee drinker- this stuff is A MUST HAVE!! My mom and grandfather have ordered it for years, I’m not sure why I only thought recently to order it for myself.

I’m a lover of flavored coffees, and they have some delicious choices!!! My first order was Irish Crème and Vanilla Nut, though I want to try Caramel next time! Its high quality coffee too, so you get that perfect caffeine boost without the shakes or a headache (like I get from Foldgers coffee- ugh!) Makes me just want to dance around my kitchen and get my day started. =]

You schedule how often you would like to receive a shipment of the coffee and they mail & bill it to you. When you sign up for the service, they send you a FREE Gevalia Brand coffee maker (It’s NICEEEE too- Stainless Steel & Black!), all you have to pay is the shipping- which totals about $15.

The coffee maker also has an automatic setting on it, which my goal is to figure out tonight. That way I can have my coffee set up the night before, and then precisely at 6am my morning java will start brewing!!

Eventually I want to get to the point where I can have time to make breakfast for everyone, though I don’t know how much earlier I can wake up!! I never figured out how my mom managed to get up at 5am and have her hair curled and bacon cooking by the time me and my brother got out of bed. As a working mom myself now, I can appreciate the little things she did for us like that. I’m lucky if I have time to grab a pop-tart running out the door!

If you guys have any tips or fool-proof methods on how to get going in the mornings (with kids)- I would love to hear them!

Cyber Cravings

So they’ve really tightened things up on internet surfing at work and I’ve been away for awhile. When I get home I’m too busy with the family to spend a lot of time online. We now only have access to Blogger at work, so I guess this will be my weekday connection to the cyberworld!!

It’s funny I used to check my myspace and facebook religiously each day, but now that I’ve gone 3 weeks with limited access, I don’t miss it at all.

Since I’ve “broken up” with f/b and m/s, I’ve picked up on a new internet addiction! I’ve been scourging news websites, learning as much information as I can! (This is probably much better for my brain than myspace anyways. =] )

I don’t mean DRY news, like an “insurgent bombing” in Iraq (frkn Katt Williams!) or more dismal reports on the economy.
That stuff can get depressing after awhile!

I’ve been finding news bits that grab my attention or relate to things I like.

Nintendo is coming out with a DSi on April 5th. This DS will have two cameras (one on the outside, and one facing the user), a voice recorder and music player that allow you to record and play your own music . Plus you get access to games on the go from the DSiWare store. I wish we had known about this before we replaced Sarina’s broken DS a couple of weeks ago! The new DS is only $170, which is about $30 more than the current DS model.
Hmm, I might have to get one for myself now…

A Sherlock Holmes movie is coming out!
I’ve always been into reading mysteries, as a child Sherlock Holmes was one of my favorite mystery novels. The cast of the movie is incredible, so I think it might be a big hit. It’s set to release Fall 09.

It’s directed by Guy Ritchie (Snatch, Madonna’s Ex), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) will play Sherlock Holmes, Jude Law will play Watson, and Rachel McAdams will play RDJ’s love interest.

Guy Ritchie says this will be a very contemporary version of the story since Sherlock Holmes is kind of out of touch with today’s world. I love the way he directed Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels- it will be interesting to see how his directing style portrays a Classic Literary Character.

Other upcoming movie remakes that sound pretty cool:

-The Karate Kid (with Jackie Chan as Mr. Miyagi)

-Conan the Barbarian (no word yet on any actors- but WHO can replace ARNOLD??!! haha)

-He-Man (The only buzz so far is that they REFUSE to use a wrestler as He-Man! LOL)
I’m just thinking of Dolph Lungren’s horrible acting skills in the 80s version of this movie! The director said he wants this He-Man to be remade like Batman was in The Dark Knight, and that it will likely be a trilogy!!

-Back to the Future (no buzz yet on the new Marty McFly or Professor)

-The Last Dragon (the buzz is Samuel L. will play the Shogun of Harlem a.k.a. Sho’Nuff and it will be produced by RZA from Wu-Tang Clan!! HOT!!)

-Terminator 4 (with Christian Bale a.k.a. Batman as John Connor!!)

AT&T is doing a new phone trade-up policy?

For now it’s just a rumor, but it looks like AT&T may be doing a phone trade up deal for current customers, kind of like trading in a video game to get a new one. You will get a cash value for the phone you trade in and be able to apply it to your new phone purchase. This would be an AWESOME alternative to having to renew your contract 2 years if you want a new phone, or having to pay full price for a new phone just b/c you already have service.

If this policy comes to life, it is expected to be effective as early as June of this year!! If I read anything else on this, I'll be sure to let my fellow AT&T ppl know!!

Valentine's Recap

Sorry guys.
I just realized I talk an awful lot about my shopping adventures, but I don’t really update on much else do I?

I had the BEST Valentines Weekend ever!!

The Thursday night before Valentine’s I helped my girls make cards for their classmates.

Sarina picked Disney Camp Rock valentines, and my quirky little Mimi picked Kung Fu Panda. She has such an oddball, fun personality. I can’t wait to see how her character continues to develop.

Sarina was such a Disney Princess, Tea Party time little girl when she was smaller.
Mimi is all Oshkosh Overalls & Rice Krispie Treats! She has always had an obsession with Dora the Explorer, but since she saw Kung Fu Panda, she’s been doing karate kicks and obsessing with Panda Bears. She also makes up songs for the foods she enjoys (LOL)! Her greatest hits album includes “Bacon, Bacon, BACON!” and “Cookies all over my FACE”

Anyways, Friday night my mom picked up the kids so she could spend Valentine’s with them at the Circus. We headed out later that night to share a late night pizza at Mellow Mushroom and then catch the Midnight Showing of the new Jason movie “Friday the 13th” ON FRIDAY the 13th- how cool was that? Haha

The movie was actually pretty dope! I’m not really a scary movie type girl, but even I enjoyed it. There was fun vibe with the crowd watching the movie, probably because it was the midnight showing. Can’t wait til it’s out on BLU-RAY!

So me and my honey squeeze (haha) decided we would make a big day of the whole Valentine’s thing since it was our first Valentine’s EVER!

We started out the day doing our own thing. He ventured off to Brandsmart while I got my nails & pedi done.

A couple of nights before we had started our BIG project for the year of sprucing up our house. Our first buy was a shag rug for our living room floors. The hardwood is pretty, but it can be uncomfortable when you’re just lounging around the sofa. We bought the rug but still had it wrapped up so we decided to go ahead and set it up before we went out.

The result was amazing! Sometimes the smallest things can really help bring a room together. The rug really centered the sofa & coffee table and gave the room a more cozy vibe. We took about 10 mins to rub our bare feet in the shag rug (haha) then got dressed for the day.

We decided to spend Valentine’s DAY out instead of evening so we wouldn’t have to fight the crowds and deal with horrible wait times. We had reservations for Dolce at Atlantic Station at 4pm, when they first opened for the day. We got to Atlantic Station around 2:30, giving us time to walk around the shops before eating our meal. There was a really cool vibe in Atlantic Station that day. Lots of couples walking around holding hands & googly eyed. A man was playing the saxophone in the park area while peddlers were selling single stem roses on every corner.

By the time we got to Dolce their doors were just opening. We were seated quickly in a good spot. The restaurant was nearly empty aside from us and the waitstaff, so we had excellent service, the food was fresh and piping hot, and we didn’t have to yell over a crowded room to each other.

Dolce has a really dark, sensual ambiance too. It felt like we were hanging out in a Vampire Bordello or something. And the drinks were good and strong! The MOSCATINI was excellent. Who would have thought to combine my favorite wine with Grey Goose? =P

We browsed a few more shops after our meal and then headed out of the city just as it was starting to get crowded. I spotted a bookcase at West Elm for my living room that we went back to buy later on in the week.

We ended the evening at home with a nightcap, chillin with our feet in the shag rug watching a movie. What a PERFECT weekend!! =)

ANGEL'S SECRET!!

WHY CAN’T I FINISH WHAT I START??!!

Two weeks have gone by since I learned I was only 40 points from my prize at Sephora. Why have I suddenly turned my interests elsewhere? For some reason it’s really difficult for me to go back and spend damn $40 there and I don’t know why.

Maybe it’s because my weekly splurges have taken a new direction recently…

I’m pretty satisfied with my makeup collection right now. There are a few eye shadows and lipsticks I want here and there, but nothing I’m really in need of. I started this weekly splurge thing right around Christmas time- It’s almost March, so I’ve been buying at least one makeup product every week during that time frame. I never thought I would say it, but I’m about Make-Upped OUT right now! Haha. But I have GOT to bite the bullet this week and complete this Sephora project so I can move on to my next splurge mission!

And the last two weeks have been a crucial turning point in my weekly splurge quest! I casually strolled into Victoria’s Secret while Mall Surfing at lunch and my splurge destiny was revealed (lol)!

My senses were on overload. All of their new spring bra and panty sets were out in pretty pastel colors, looking like Easter M&Ms!! They have a whole new line of lotions and perfumes. Super cute & casual pj sets for lounging around the house…

And of course, they had to have a SALE too! Some new bra called the “Air Wear”?? is on sale for $29.50 right now. It’s a really light breathable fabric for the warm weather months up ahead. I had to buy one, OF COURSE, because summer IS coming… lol (The Simpsons- inside joke)

…..ok I bought two! HAHA! There goes my splurge budget for last week!
They also have really cute pastel undies with girlie patterns and graphics on sale 3 for $30!

So THEN the sales associate SET ME UP- She bypasses TWO registers in the bra section to ring me up at a register in a separate room of nothing but perfume, lotion & powder puffs! Now I’m waiting for her to complete my transaction, and I can’t help but to smell this, smell that, try this lotion- ooh and aah over this display case- man, Sometimes it can be so much FUN being a girl!

It takes me back to my beginning days as a single new mom- when I ALWAYS had a second job to make up for not having another person’s income. For one blissful year I worked at Victoria’s Secret on the weekends. The BEST retail side job a girl could ever ask for! Each season when a new bra came out, you got one free. You learn how to measure for the proper bra size and the training courses were awesome- (ask me about the 3 things you should look for when buying lingerie! LOL) You got first dibs on the semi-annual sale (and now you ladies now why you can never find matching sets when you shop that sale- the employees got ‘em first!), plus EMPLOYEE DISCOUNTS!!

And then it was just cool to be surrounded by feminine scents, pretty frilly things, and soft music all day while wearing a black suit!

That year I worked there, my goal was to have 30 matching B&P sets. I met my goal and then some! I also had a gang of sweet smelling lotions, bubble bath and perfumes. Even though I was exhausted and had worked my ass off all week at both jobs PLUS staying on top of my mommy duties, it felt like it was all worthwhile. I would go home from being on my feet all day on the weekend at my second job, tired as hell, and just SUBMERGE myself in a bathtub full of bubbles that smelled like strawberries & champagne!!

Plus there is just something about wearing something pretty UNDERNEATH your clothes that gives you kind of a confidence boost throughout the day…

Anyways, enough of my reminiscing- I think you guys know where my weekly splurge reports will be coming from for the next couple of months!!

The 500 Club!!

Blog buddies!!!

I have a few minutes before I dash into a meeting so I wanted to get you guys up to speed.
I'm so excited!!! Only $40 left until I hit 500 shopping points at Sephora! With the weekly splurges, I've been able to build up pretty quickly on top of some previous points I hadn't cashed in yet!!

Though I think I'm narrowing my purchases down as far as items I want from Sephora.
Every week I've been at Sephora testing new products to figure out what to add to my collection next, and there is one thing that I've learned...

Just because a makeup product is expensive, doesn't mean that it's the best value or the best quality. I bought a $25 lipgloss because of the product name, and turned around and returned it the next day because it felt sticky and clumpy on my lips.

But I LOVE me some M.A.C. glosses and they run as low as $14!!
It made me realize I could reach my goal of makeup product inventory much faster if I switch things up a bit!

I've decided that I'm going to meet my $40 goal at Sephora so I can get my Reward Points Prize, and then I will switch to M.A.C. for the remainder of my cosmetics bag needs.

I still don't think Dior Mascara can be topped, so I will go ahead and purchase the Dior Iconic Mascara (per Eunice's advice) at $27, and I'm also thinking about a travel size perfume stick at $25, so I can test out a new spring/summer scent and see if I like it enough to buy the full size!

As far as the rest of my makeup needs- I don't have much left to go before I will be satisfied for a while. Wishlist is as follows:

And don’t get me started on Chinese Bakery treats!! I wish I didn’t live so far from Dinh Ho Bakery, I would spend my whole day in there picking out pastries!! =(

-Some new authors/books to read! I stumbled upon a new mystery writer that I’ve never read before and have been enjoying my book, but I would also like reading something a little less heavy for the summer (something quirky and funny, maybe reminiscent of Jemima J?) Hey bloggers!!
Looks like it’s been a few weeks since my last entry! Lots of things have been keeping me busy at home and work.
Nevertheless, I have some downtime today so I will get you guys up to speed on what’s happenin’ in my world.

The weekly splurge mission continues!
I’m actually starting to feel pretty good about the purchases I’ve been making, and may be looking at expanding the splurge purchases beyond makeup and nail polish soon.

I purchased the Aveda Skin Care set, which is awesome! The cool thing about Aveda is that they sell their products in refillable travel sizes, so I was able to get a whole set and still stay within my splurge budget.
I purchased the exfoliator, the toning mist, and the moisturizing face lotion. DEFINITE BUYS!!!

My skin feels great, so much so that I wash it about 3 times a day just so I can feel refreshed. Lol!
There is also something kind of fulfilling in knowing that you are purchasing products that are kind to the environment and that a portion of your purchase goes towards Aveda’s various worthy causes.
They also tend to spoil you if you have time to browse around in the store. I purchased the skin care, but I received a biodegradable and cute travel bag to store it in, some free hair care products, a complimentary hand massage AND two cups of Aveda’s herbal tea (which they also sell). I left the mall feeling like I was leaving a spa! =)

I also feel like I’m getting squared away in the makeup sector thanks to some smart purchases.
I’m still enjoying the NARS blush I purchased as my first splurge, and I’m content with mascara for now, but when my supply runs low I WILL go back and try the DIOR Iconic mascara thanks to my buddy Eunice’s advice!!

My most recent addition has been the Anastasia Brow Stencils, which I really love! Purchasing the entire kit doesn’t fit into my splurge budget, so I’m purchasing one product at a time- but I don’t think I would use everything in the kit anyways. My eyebrows are naturally thin, so normally I have to draw them in to a certain extent, but the powder looks so much more defined. There are 4 different stencil shapes to play around with, and each one gives you a different look ranging from Angelic to DIVA. I can’t wait to see the finalized look when I get the rest of the components from the collection!

As far as future purchase options- I have my eye on more Anastasia products, a cream pot concealer, a gold face luminizing lotion (for that spring/summer glow), a pretty peach lip color, and some spring eye shadow colors. Though I have NO IDEA which to purchase next! I spent about 30 mins debating on buying the stencils vs. the concealer. The only thing that throws me off on the concealer is that it’s almost time to tan, and I don’t want to look crazy with white raccoon eyes!
My favorite season is approaching- SPRING!! Time to reinvent myself- My look, my attitude, my focus…

I’m still at the drawing board on most of it, but I have lots of new ideas and big things in the works this year! Can’t help but to be excited!!!

So I added another nail polish to my budding collection as my splurge for this week.
Sephora by OPI polish in "Ms. Can't Be Wrong".

A pretty, dark magenta color with a little shimmer to it. I still want to stick to darker shades til the spring, but I thought I would do something a little different from the black and dark wine shades everyone is wearing these days...

Staying kinda low key on the weekly splurges considering I've been buying clothes lately too. =P
I'm actually pretty satisfied with how quickly my wardrobe has progressed since I became more practical about where I shop!

I would LOVE to have a closet full of designer gear... but with the way the economy is, it seems gluttonous to spend designer dollars when you can find ways to be attractive on a reasonable budget.
Plus your clothes start adding up a LOT faster when the price tag is realistic. ;)

Though I still don't believe in wearing cheap fabric! There are plenty of clothes made of decent material you can find at affordable prices.
This may be a matter of personal opinion, but I have always thought that cheaply made clothing LOOKS cheap, and the clothes you wear is what people's impression of you is. (This is why I avoid stores with no return policy, stores that sell kitchen appliances in ADDITION to clothes, and club clothes stores like the PLAGUE)

A lot of this goes back to the "age" thing too. When you reach a certain age, you should look put together. You are older and wiser so your wardrobe should reflect a level of sophistication. And I think the sophistication level should INCREASE as you get older.
The tough thing is finding the balance... Even those of us who are creeping to the thirties have to realize that we are still really young- and our wardrobe should be fun.
We have to be able to look more polished than the under twenty-fivers, but not come off looking OLDER than our age either!
Geesh. This is a tough age.

Anyhoo, I haven't had much opportunity to get all dolled up recently, so I'm really excited about being able to celebrate my longtime buddy Tina's 27th birthday at LOLA's tonight!! YAY, I get to sport my new nail color too! lol

OK blog buddies, here are my birthday (And New Year's) weekly splurges.

Purchase number 1- This super cute mod neutral nail polish- Metro Chic!!!
I've been wanting to start a nail polish collection and I think this was a great first choice!
The color is a lavender-gray tone. It's subtle enough to wear in a corporate setting but the color is very original. I've gotten quite a few compliments on the color and the quick dry doesn't take me long to touch up.

I got this round ball mascara by Givenchy with HIGH hopes after reading great reviews. I also thought the round ball concept was inventive, but I'm sad to say I'm a little disappointed in the product. =/
It DOES do a great job of separating your lashes and you can apply it in a flash since you don't have to worry about poking you eye out with a long wand.
But it doesn't make your lashes fuller or longer. I was expecting a more dramatic effect especially with the price ($27).
I thought about returning it, but decided to keep for my lower lashes.
For full dramatic, FAUX Looking lashes- Stick to DiorShow or Dior BLACKOUT!

After purchasing the Givenchy mascara and not being totally satisfied, I realized I was in need of a good mascara. I didn't feel right spending another $25 on mascara after I had JUST purchased some the day before and I have so many other makeup products I need to update first...
Instead I settled on the travel size Too Faced Lash Injection.
Only $8! I couldn't be happier. I now have a good mascara to hold me over until I re-up on Dior, but it's also small enough to fit in my pocket!

I also got a free birthday gift from Sephora. The little things can make you so happy sometimes! lol
Bath/Shower Gel scented like a Vanilla Cupcake.
The bottle reads, "Happy Birthday Gorgeous!"
...Although I can't bring myself to use it since (drunken) Kennan & Joon said it smells like Cool Ranch Doritos. LMAO!

Weekly Splurge!!

So I know we have established this plan where I buy one item a week for myself, and that I'm supposed to focus on makeup first and then move to another area- but I couldn't help myself!!
I was enjoying some rare alone time, browsing home accents and I found this oil painting...

It inspired me to dream up a whole new living room scheme with warm colors. I'm picturing long drapes in a spice/drk orange and throw pillows in silver & crimson.

I've also never been much of a "flower" art girl and I love the fact that the picture is something as modern as a city but is depicted softly instead of some harsh, gritty downtown picture.

I also found some really cool modern table lamps for my living room with a warm yellow shade. (Darker than it appears in this pic from my phone)

Is it coincidence that the lamps I want are accenting CITY landscape artwork in a totally different store from the one I had JUST bought my painting from?

...I think it's more like DESTINY. ;]

...But no, I didn't buy the lamps. =(
I would have to bring lunch for a whole freakin month to get the lamps on this weekly budget plan... but I AM considering taking one for the team!! lol

A month of ramen noodles and leftovers is a small sacrifice for a baller ass living room!!

It's super slow at work here on Christmas Eve.
Lyn's off today so I don't even have a gmail chat buddy. =/
I guess I will catch you guys up on the past week and present you with some of the random conversations that Lyn has to sit thru! lol! enjoy...

We've been super busy around the house this week- stuffing presents under the bed and hiding them in closets from the kids until we had time to wrap them.
Last night we finally got the last presents wrapped after watching Johnny Depp in "Secret Window"... I don't remember watching that movie before, but now I have to go find that Stephen King book! It was pretty good!!!

I bought my chuck roast for Christmas Dinner and got the recipe from my mom last night- hope it turns out to be a great Holiday Feast!! Last night I made a rub of olive oil, basil, rosemary & thyme and coated the roast. Then I sliced white pearl onions and garlic on top. It's going to marinate all day today, and then tonight I will put it in the roaster on low for 9 hours covered in carrots, celery & potatoes. Sounds amazing, I just hope it turns out like my mom's!!

So last night while we are wrapping gifts, Tre randomly says "You know, you don't have that much casual clothes... Why don't you get some hoodies or something?"

And now I'm pondering what he said b/c I have a lot of time on my hands...and that's what women do!! Guys think for about 2 seconds about what comes out of their mouth, but we spend a whole day dissecting what they said!

This is true. I don't have many casual clothes b/c 80% of my week is spent in an office, so most of my wardrobe is business/business casual.
And as you guys know from my previous post I've been doing a serious overhaul in trying to do things for myself, but casual weekend wear was kinda low on the list.

But it is probably a good idea to invest in more comfortable gear. In my former years, most of my weekends were spent clubbing, so even back then my weekend clothes weren't casual.

But now my weekends outside of the home are mostly spent at Publix, Costco & Lowes.
Not that I'm complaining! I rather enjoy a more relaxed, homebody lifestyle, but I should have a wardrobe suited for it.

But then where to shop for HOODIES??
I certainly don't want to go stores like Aeropostale, A&F, and Hollister. I'm pushing 30 soon- I would feel really retarded picking out the same outfit as a 14 year old (lol!), plus the smell of all that damn cologne in those stores gives me a freaking headache!!!

I'm browsing around online now at hoodies, b/c HEY- I GOT TIME. haha
I've posted pics below- help me with some opinions please???!!
Or if you guys know a good place for a 28 year old to buy some casj weekend gear, holler.
(Lyn, if you tell me to go to Wal-mart I will kick you! haha)

The PLAN

Okay, so in reading that last post I’m not too happy with where my head was at that day.
Don’t you hate it when you have those moments of vulnerability where you doubt yourself?
Fortunately I’m one who when faced with challenges analyzes the situation and determines a solution by strategizing and goal setting...
(In a nut shell, I’m a planner!)

I’ve been brainstorming a solution to my issue.
I’m sure other young mothers out there can feel me on this one…

Problem: How can I make sure I am keeping myself up without experiencing the self-imposed guilt that I may be taking away from my family by doing something for me?

My Solution: Ok, so here’s what I’ve worked out.
Since buying a home I’ve limited myself to eating out only 3 times a week.
An average combo meal is around $6.60, which 3 times a week is $20.
I have decided that instead of eating out on those 3 days a week, I will bring lunch from home EVERY day of the week, and using that $20 a week budget to buy something for myself.

That way I won’t feel as if I’m taking money away from my family b/c it is money I’ve already budgeted to spend.
(And I’ll also be improving my health by staying away from fast food! LOL)

I also enjoy the "little" pleasures in life and the thought of getting a small gift every week makes me smile. =D

My job isn’t far from Perimeter Mall, so one day a week I will go there on my lunch hour and purchase an item for myself within a ballpark of my $20 budget. After I make my purchases, I can come back and let you guys know how the product worked to feed my blog addiction. ;]

I’m thinking I will start with re-upping on some new makeup. I’m running out of my current stock and was hoping to try some new products.

…And this solution began TODAY!! Haha
I went to Sephora at lunch and copped a new blush!!
Super Orgasm by NARS
It’s this really pretty peachy pink blush with gold flecks.
It looks really good with my skin tone…. $25!
(OK, so I went a little over budget… but I did say “ballpark”!)

As soon as I got in the car I put the blush on and it gave me a gorgeous glow… Looks like I’ve been naughty! Hopefully that’s not sending off the wrong message with me being gone an hour for lunch… =P

Anyways, I’m super happy with the product, I feel good about the purchase and guilt free!!
Can’t wait to tell you guys about my next splurge adventure!!

Christmas Wishing...

So I spent my entire lunch at the mall today.

I was supposed to be looking for candles and ended up lost in rows of makeup, lingerie and snazzy peacoats.

Why do I torture myself?

How come you always see a million things you want when you're window shopping, but when you go shopping with your pockets loaded, nothing appeals to you??

I can hardly remember the last time I TRULY splurged on myself..
OK, so maybe it was last Christmas... [lol]- But I don't really consider that splurging as much as just catching up. I bought things that I NEEDED and had put off as opposed to buying frivolous things simply because I wanted them.

It seems like the kids always need something, there's always something we need for the house, unexpected costs come up and then extra money sometimes doesn't get spent as wisely as we plan, i.e. Bulk Junk Food purchases at Costco and my extensive Juicy Couture SOCK collection which has YET to be rivaled (don't ask!).

I feel like somehow in the midst of it all, I lost myself.

The selfishness of a life prior to children has disappeared to be replaced by the Martyr who takes pride in knowing she does for everyone in her family but herself.

Now when I'm at a point in my life where I've met the most accomplishment thus far and should be the most self-satisfied, I feel as if I lack the confidence I deserve because I'm not doing myself justice.

The Pillow Dilemma

Man, I never thought selecting pillows would be such an ordeal, but now that I'm really focusing on personalizing the house, it seems like I've spent more time on this decision than on my medical benefits. =P

So what to do?

I have a neutral leather couch, dark mahoghany hardwood floors and neutral sand walls so there is definitely need for a color to spice things up- However the entire house is a warm sand tone (including the baseboards and trim) so I really want to keep true to the natural vibe of the house.

My style tends to lean towards contemporary/modern, but I want a cozy enviro for the kids and family too.

Help!! lol
Here are a couple of different ideas I'm leaning towards. Hoping you guys can give me some feedback so I can figure out which style I'm leaning toward... Thanks!

So this is my living room...

I really love these metallic silver linen drapes from Pottery Barn. The linen material will stay in line with the natural vibe I want, but the fact that they are silver metallic gives it a modern twist.

And they also have these chocolate paisley linen throw pillows with the paisley print in a soft metallic gray. I can use modern mini-art frames with the silver and brown tones to accent the room and tie it all together...

I'm afraid the brown will be too much... well, BROWN in comparison with the floor and walls. (We want to keep the walls the sand color b/c our fireplace mantel is the same color and we like the way it blends into the wall- see below) But I do like the visual contrast of using lots of different patterns in the mini-art and also the paisley print is interesting...

Should I opt for bright multi-colored pillows in a modern print by KOKO and accent the rich tones by encorporating the color in my barstools?

Or do I opt for large, comfy organic pillows from West Elm in soothing tones and then accessorize with metallic elements in the room (therefore allowing me to keep the metallic linen curtains I'm so partial to!! lol)

Gahhhhhhhhhhh!! I'm so torn.

The Annual Gingerbread House Party

Our family knows Christmas is right around the corner once we get the invite for the Annual Gingerbread House Party!

Ms. Jeannette goes above and beyond each year, creating a "base model gingerbread house" for the kids and letting them add their choice of candy to decorate.
Each year she always has a different personalization for the gingerbread houses to make it extra special.

This year is no exception! She made a campfire next to the house made from cinnamon sticks and a ember blaze of candy corn! [see in pics below]

The kids had a great time listening to Christmas Carols while they worked, eating as much candy as they put on their houses, and sharing in the excitement of the Holiday Season...

Thanksgiving at our house this year...

Not quite what I had in mind, but seems like it was a success for the family.
The kids ended up going with my mom out of town to visit my grandfather, so the house was surprisingly quiet. It's funny how as a parent you sometimes pray for peace and quiet, but when you do get it- you don't know what to do with it!!

I found some pretty neat fall-themed tabletop items for my Thanksgiving centerpiece, though I still don't have a proper servingware set and my table which seemed size appropriate for my apartment wasn't quite suited for our large extended family. I ended up having to use our poker table and it was impossible to find a nice tablecloth to cover a 72" round table AND the metal legs. =P

..Aside from the fact that everyone ended up in the living room watching the football game during dinner, so my table setting went totally unnoticed. :-X

Luckily the food was delicious! Mom and Pops did the Turkey, which took alot of stress off of me considering I've never basted and cooked a turkey before.
I found a cookbook from The Blue Willow Inn, a former plantation that was converted into a buffet restaurant. I figured it's IMPOSSIBLE to go wrong with southern comfort food recipes from a plantation! lol (And I was right!)
My collard greens and mac & cheese turned out QUITE Scrumptious!

Okay, since Lyn reactivated her blog, of COURSE I had to reactivate mine… because I’m her follower. LOL
(y’all didn’t know she is the one in charge huh? The short ones are always running thangs behind the scenes!)

Anyways, getting pretty excited about our housewarming for our new home this weekend! We already got a few presents but I’ve been told by a certain PARTY POOPER (*ahem* haha) that I can’t open them until tomorrow, so tonight will be like Christmas Eve to me! Can’t sleep, tossing and turning, shaking the boxes trying to figure out what’s inside…

I’ve posted a picture below of what the family room looks like now, but we are slowly adding things on so this should just be a work in progress. Right now we are still getting furniture and electronics, but I can’t wait to start bringing in some décor to personalize the house!

I don't know everything I want to do YET, but these baller ass lamps are high on my list! (Though I would have to add some color to the lampshades)

Which reminds me- this housewarming is right on time! There are still so many things that we need for the house that we don’t have yet!
I thought I was loaded on household goods from my apartment, but I guess until you actually move in your own home, you don’t realize how much of a BIG difference it is between stuff you need for an apartment versus a house.

Being a homeowner feels like being a part of a whole new world I didn’t even know about! It’s kinda funny, things we are interested in now that we never cared about before…

Latrail’s new favorite hangout spot is “Lowes” and I’m meeting up ppl at “Linens and Things” instead of the club! LMAO

Then there is always that friendly competition with the Yun Family to see who can outdo whom
(Lyn, you might have won the battle on “baller curtains” for now, but I’m coming for ya SPRING 2009!! LOL)…

We DID take y’all on the Flat Screen tho’, admit it! =P

Another exciting thing I didn’t anticipate is spending the Holidays in our own home!
I’m sure a lot of you don’t know about my undercover “Arts and Crafts” addiction… (must be the white side in me!)
But I get “Holiday Crazy” with themes and kid’s projects- hopefully I can find the time and money to do them all!

So I guess this blog is going to be related to different projects I want to try at the house, or holiday related projects, or some of my other “gay but cool” new hobbies!
